Pickpocket & Disguise System

Post by K.Kragh »

The Rise of Neverwinter features unique and custom made Pickpocket and Disguise Systems. While we will not go into the code specifics, we have decided to give out some basic insights into the systems so that people can take this into consideration when they plan out their character builds.

Pickpocket System:
The pickpocket system can be used to steal gold from other players. You can only steal successfully from the same character once per server reset. Anyone, regardless of how useless he is, can attempt to steal from someone. A master pickpocketer can earn quite a nice chunk of change from this career choice. If you want to be a great thief you will therefore need high ranks in Pickpocket. Being good at emptying pockets and purses is not the same as being good at getting away with it though. If you want to get away with your 'business' unnoticed you will need to invest in the Hide skill as well. Be aware that the victim of your greedy fingers is not the only one that might notice what you are up to. People in your vicinity might notice your actions, and you will need a good spot yourself to notice that they noticed you to begin with, especially if they have high ranks in bluff!

You might want to pick your targets carefully as well. Characters with high spot as well as tumble (reaction skill) might be especially difficult to deal with!

For good measure I will add that catching someone stealing is as good as any reason to engage in PvP and beat the thief to a pulp before either turning him to the guards or disposing of him yourself (whatever suits the inclinations of that particular character).

Disguise System:
The Disguise system requires at least 10 ranks in the Bluff skill in order to be used. The higher the bluff, the harder it is for bystanders to detect the disguiser's real identity. Being a good performer also adds to your ability to disguise yourself. Seeing through someone's disguise will require a combination of spot and sense motive as well as the active attention of the 'detector'. Master disguisers are naturally better at spotting other disguisers.
